I received this email last november from Rick Whorwood, a very experienced float and fly fisherman in Ontario. If you go to his website www.flycastingschool.com you will see his creds as an accomplished fly fisherman but he loves floatfishing too.....read on....
This past week I did a trip with my good friend Phil Clough.
If you know anything about float fishing (centre-pinning as it's now called) you know that the Clough Reel is the Holy Grail of float reels, it's long since gone out of production and very pricey if you can find one.
I thought it would be fun to visit an old friend (float rod & reel that is) So prior to the trip I purchased a G.Loomis STR-1352-Cp 11'3" and a Canada Drifter Float Reel from Wayne Petrevan.
Although it took a bit to get back into the swing of things, I did manage to get a few fish drifting with flies.
The Canada Drifter Reel is as smooth as silk, it was so much fun landing a fish on this system (hand to hand combat, no drag system only a clicker)
Wayne builds a beautiful reel, Phil gave it his seal of approval, which is about the best compliment you can get.
